PSU's James Named Athlete of the Week

March 22, 2007

Michael James, Penn State
Jr., Clifton, Va./Centreville High School

James earns his first career Athlete of the Week nod after propelling the Nittany Lions to a 4-3 upset over No. 21 Michigan.

At No. 1 singles, James faced Michigan's 39th-ranked Brian Hung. It marked the second victory over a ranked opponent in as many weeks for James, who is ranked 93rd in the nation. The Nittany Lion junior came out on top after a hard-fought three-set match to clinch the point for Penn State, moving the team within one point of securing the team victory. The win improved James to 8-2 in duals this season.

In doubles, James teamed with senior Ryan Berger in the No. 1 doubles match for the first time this season. The tandem rallied from a 5-2 deficit to upset the country's second-best doubles team of Michigan's Hung and Matko Maravic by a score of 9-7.

He is the first Nittany Lion selection since Mark Barry claimed the honors Mar. 22, 2006.
