Three teams are set to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round of the 2009 Big Ten Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament after winning opening round matches on Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sixth seed Indiana, No. 7 seed Penn State and No. 8 seed Wisconsin survived day one of the conference tournament and will look to resume competition tomorrow.
Wisconsin rolled past No. 9 seed Iowa, 4-0, in the first match of the day, earning an opportunity to vie against top-seeded Ohio State on Friday at 10 a.m. (ET).
Indiana downed No. 11 seed Michigan State, 4-1, to advance to the tournament quarterfinals where they will face off against third seed Minnesota at 2 p.m. (ET).
In the final match of the day, Penn State defeated No. 10 seed Purdue, 4-0, nabbing the last open slot in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Nittany Lions prepare to meet second-seed Illinois in an afternoon match, slated for a 2 p.m. (ET) start.
Big Ten Tournament host Michigan earned a No. 4 seed and will look to face No. 5 seed Northwestern in Friday’s fourth match at 10 a.m. (ET). U-M and NU finished in a tie for fourth place in the final Big Ten standings, but the Wolverines own the tiebreaker thanks to their 4-3 victory over the Wildcats earlier in the season.
