Michigan's Maravic Earns Final Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award of the Season
April 27, 2005
Matko Maravic, Michigan
Maravic, ranked 87th in the nation in singles last week, played an instrumental role in Michigan's important Big Ten victories over Indiana (5-2) and Penn State (6-1). The Wolverines' wins helped U-M finish in third place in the Big Ten, its highest finish since 1999. Last Saturday against the Hoosiers, Maravic knocked off No. 57 Jakub Praibis 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 and then followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 upset of Penn State's Mark Barry on Sunday. Maravic and teammate Brian Hung won both their doubles matches at No. 1 over the weekend, helping U-M secure the doubles point against both opponents. Maravic finished the regular season with team-best records of 20-12 overall and 15-8 against dual match opponents. Maravic and Hung, ranked 59th in the national doubles poll, hold a team-best 12-5 doubles record, including an 8-2 mark in the Big Ten. They have been victorious in 10 of their last 12 matches.
This is the fourth Athlete of the Week selection of the year for Maravic.
