The Big Ten Men’s Tennis Tournament, hosted by Indiana University, is set to begin with opening-round action on Thursday, April 29, concluding with the tournament championship match on Sunday, May 2. The tournament winner will be the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship.

Three matchups highlight the opening round schedule on Thursday. In the first match of the tournament, No. 8 Penn State (3-7, 15-10) takes on No. 9 Northwestern (1-9, 9-14) at 9 a.m. ET. In Match 2, No. 7 Iowa (4-6, 12-9) will face No. 10 Purdue (1-9, 11-14) at 11:30 a.m. ET, and in the third match of the day, No. 6 Indiana (5-5, 15-9) faces No. 11 Michigan State at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The top five seeds each received byes into Friday’s quarterfinal round. The top-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes, winners of the last four Big Ten Tournaments, will face the Penn State/Northwestern winner at 8 a.m. ET. Fourth-seeded Wisconsin (7-3, 18-6) will meet No. 5 Minnesota at 10:30 a.m. ET and will be followed by No. 2 Illinois (9-1, 17-9) against the Iowa/Purdue winner. Friday’s fourth and final match will pit No. 3 Michigan against the Indiana/Michigan State winner.

Saturday’s first semifinal will be at 10 a.m. ET and will be followed by the second semifinal at 2 pm. ET. The tournament final will be contested at Noon on Sunday.

Ohio State’s reign over Big Ten men’s tennis continued at the 2009 Big Ten Men’s Tennis Tournament, held at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan. The Buckeyes clinched their fourth consecutive tournament championship with a 4-1 victory over second-seeded Illinois, the second straight year Ohio State and Illinois met for the conference’s automatic NCAA Championship berth.
