Ohio State Wins Big Ten Tournament With 4-1 Win Over Illinois
The Ohio State Buckeyes won their fifth-straight Big Ten Tournament, ninth overall, by defeating No. 2 Illinois, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Indiana University and clinched the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. After Ohio State took a 1-0 lead after doubles, Illinois tied the match with a win at No. 3 singles. The Buckeyes then won three straight matches at Nos. 1, 4 and 6 singles to clinch the tournament title.
Illinois Heads to Final After Posting 4-0 Victory Against Michigan
No. 2 seed Illinois will meet Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament final after defeating Michigan 4-0 in Saturday’s second semifinal. The Illini won two of three doubles matches before claiming the first three singles matches to earn the win. With wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, Illinois’ Connor Roth was the third Illini to win in singles play, clinching the match with a victory at No. 6.
Next up, No. 2 Illinois will face No. 1 Ohio State in Sunday’s Big Ten Tournament final, scheduled for Noon ET.
Ohio State Advances To Tournament Final With Win Over Wisconsin
Top-seeded Ohio State earned a spot in the Big Ten Tournament final with a 4-0 win over No. 4 Wisconsin on Saturday. The Buckeyes move on to face the winner of Illinois/Michigan in Saturday's final. Needing all three doubles matches to secure the one-point advantage, Ohio State won the first three singles matches at Nos. 1, 2, and 4 to punch its ticket to the final.
The day's second semifinal begins at 2 p.m. ET when No. 2 Illinois faces No. 3 Michigan.
Michigan Semifinal-bound after 4-0 win over Indiana
The No. 3 seed Michigan Wolverines concluded the second day of the Big Ten Tournament with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Indiana to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Michigan's win in doubles, coupled with its victories at Nos. 2, 4, and 6 singles, gave the Wolverines a spot in the Saturday's second semifinal, where they will face Illinois at 2 p.m. ET.
In Saturday's first semifinal, top seed Ohio State will face No. 4 Wisconsin at 10 a.m. ET. The tournament final will be played Sunday at Noon ET.
No. 2 Illinois Punches Ticket to Semis With 4-0 Win Over Iowa
Second-seeded Illinois will make a return trip to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals after posting a 4-0 win over No. 7 Iowa on Friday afternoon. After taking the first two doubles matches to go up 1-0, the Illini had three straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 3, and 4 singles to clinch the victory. The Illini move on to face the winner of the Michigan/Indiana matchup, which takes place later this afternoon, in Saturday's second semifinal.
No. 4 Wisconsin Earns Semifinal Berth With 4-0 Win Over No.5 Minnesota.
The fourth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers punched their ticket to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals with a 4-0 win over No. 5 Minnesota on Friday. Entering singles play with a 1-0 advantage after its win in doubles, Wisconsin enjoyed wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles, with the match-clinching point coming from Billy Bertha at No. 6. The Badgers move on to face top-seeded Ohio State in the first of two Saturday semifinals at 10 a.m. ET.
The next match at the IU Tennis Center will be No. 2 Illinois against No. 7 Iowa.
No. 1 Ohio State Advances to Semifinals With 4-0 Win Over Northwestern
Top-seeded Ohio State opened play at the Big Ten Tournament with a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Northwestern on Friday morning. The Buckeyes won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, then victories at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 singles gave Ohio State an insurmountable lead. With the win, Ohio State won its 30th match of the season, the fourth year in a row the Buckeyes have won 30 or more matches in a season.
Match 2 of Friday's quarterfinals pits No. 4 Wisconsin against No. 5 Minnesota.
Indiana Advances to Quarterfinals with 4-0 win over Michigan State
Sixth-seeded Indiana moved on to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 win over Michigan State on Thursday afternoon. After taking a 1-0 lead with a win in doubles, three Indiana singles players won in straight sets, capped by Will Kendall's 6-2, 6-2 win over Michigan State's Joe Vallee at No. 6 singles, giving the Hoosiers a berth in the second round, where they will meet No. 3 Michigan.
Iowa Outlasts Purdue, 4-3
Much like the match preceding it, Match 2 of the Big Ten Tournament was determined by the seventh team point as No. 7 Iowa defeated No. 10 Purdue, 4-3. With the outcome in doubt and the match tied 3-3, the No.1 singles match between Iowa's Marc Bruche and Purdue's Patrick Rose came down to a decisive third set. After dropping the first set, Bruche rallied for the win, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to move Iowa into a quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 Illinois on Friday.
In the final matchup of the day, No. 6 Indiana takes on No. 11 Michigan State.
Northwestern Defeats Penn State, 4-3
Northwestern and Penn State opened the 2010 Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament with a match that went to the very end as the No. 9 Wildcats knocked off the ninth-seeded Nittany Lions, 4-3. Tied 3-3 with the No. 6 singles match still to be decided, Northwestern's Chris Jackman won a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-7, 6-3 battle against Penn State's Taylor Cohen. The Wildcats move on to Friday's quarterfinals where they will face No. 1 Ohio State.
No. 7 Iowa and No. 10 Purdue next take to the courts for the second match of opening round.
The 2010 Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament is underway with No. 8 Penn State facing No. 9 Northwestern in the tournament's first matchup. The winner will advance to Friday's quarterfinals and face top-seeded Ohio State at 8 a.m. ET.
