NCAA Men's Singles & Doubles Championships Underway
May 23, 2012 The NCAA Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships is underway in Athens, Ga. Five singles players and four doubles pairs compete in the national tournament, with singles action beginning today and doubles play commencing on Thursday. After earning No. 9-16 seeds, Ohio State's Chase Buchanan opens the singles tournament for the conference contingent, squaring off against Tennessee's Mikelis Libietis at 10 a.m. ET. At Noon, seventh-seeded Dennis Nevolo of Illinois faces North Carolina State's Jaime Pulgar in first-round action. The Buckeyes' No. 9-16 seed Blaz Rola takes on Olivier Borsos of LSU at 4:30 p.m., while the Illini's Roy Kalmanovich looks to upset top-ranked Steve Johnson of USC at 5:30 p.m. Sixth-seeded Evan King competes against Virginia's Alex Domijan at 6 p.m. On the doubles side, top-ranked Buchanan and Rola take on North Carolina's Joey Burkhardt and Jose Hernandez, while Illinois' Kalmanovich and Nevolo match up against Mississippi State's George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin. Penn State's duo of Russell Bader and Jason Lee face Oklahoma's Costin Paval and Dane Webb, and Wisconsin's Fredrik Ask and Billy Bertha look to upset Virginia's Nos. 5-8 seeds Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins.
