Illinois and Purdue Take Home Weekly Laurels

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week Gakologelwang Masheto, Illinois Masheto opened up his senior season with two regional qualifying marks and two runner-up performances at the Arizona State Invitational this past weekend. His time of 46.31 in the 400-meter dash smashed the qualifying standard by nearly one second. The 2008 Olympian closed out the meet by anchoring the Illini’s 4x400-meter relay squad, posting a time of 3:08.38. Masheto, a two-time NCAA All-American, takes home his second career weekly outdoor honor. Last Illinois Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week: Gakologelwang Masheto (3/20/07) Men’s Field Athlete of the Week Ben Harpenau, Purdue Harpenau launched a regional qualifying mark in the hammer throw and just missed his career-best distance this past weekend at the Arizona State Invitational, marking 209-04 (63.81m.). His throw surpassed the NCAA standard by over seven meters and ranks as the Big Ten’s best this season by more than four meters. For his efforts, the senior hurler claimed third-place honors in a field that witnessed eight student-athletes notch NCAA qualifying marks.
