Illinois and Ohio State Earn Conference Recognition

The conference office announced on Wednesday the weekly men's outdoor track and field awards. Illinois' Chris DeSilva was recognized as Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, while Ohio State's Michael Hartfield received Field Athlete of the Week accolades. Track Athlete of the Week: Illinois' Chris DeSilva won the 3,000-meter steeplechase last weekend as the Illini competed in the LSU Invitational. DeSilva crossed the line with a personal-best time of 8:57.51, which currently ranks fifth in the nation this season and first in the Big Ten. The mark also placed the St. Charles, Ill., native into the program's top-10 list in the event. This is the first weekly award of DeSilva's career and for the Illini this season. Last Illinois Track Athlete of the Week: Andrew Riley (April 21, 2010) Field Athlete of the Week: Michael Hartfield earned two first-place finishes last weekend at the Jim Click Shootout, helping the Buckeyes to the team title. The junior posted a personal-best of 7.91 meters in the long jump and a mark of15.63 meters in the triple jump. Hartfield's long jump performance currently tops the nation and conference, while his triple jump effort ranks among the top-five nationally. This marks the first field weekly award for Ohio State.
