Minnesota Teams Still in Front Heading Into Final Day of Big Ten Championships

Following Day 2 of action at the 2010 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships, both the Minnesota men and women increased their lead in the team standings heading into the final day of competition on Sunday. Additionally, two women’s championships records were broken during Saturday’s action. The Gopher men’s team finished with 79 points through eight scored events, ahead of second-place Indiana (36), and third-place Purdue (35) and Wisconsin (35). The Gophers look to win their second straight Big Ten Championship. On the women’s side, the Gophers hold a four-point advantage over second-place Wisconsin, 56-52. Indiana is third with 41 points and Ohio State is fourth with 33 points. Indiana’s Faith Sherrill set a championships record in the shot put with a throw of 55-10.5 (7.03 meters) and Penn State’s Bridget Franek’s time of 9:48.28 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase set the new championships standard. The final day of competition at the 2010 Big Ten Championships will be Sunday, with action beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
