Jake Herbert, Northwestern Herbert, a redshirt freshman, captured the Midlands Championship at 174 pounds last week by defeating No. 5 seed Mitch Hancock of Central Michigan, 11-6. The championship victory is the first by an NU undergraduate since Andre Allen won the 142 pound title in 1974. The victory over Hancock was the third-consecutive upset for the seventh-seeded Herbert. He dropped No. 2 Pete Friedl of Illinois in the quarterfinal, 5-2, before defeating No. 6 Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the semifinals by the same score. Herbert's 4-0 performance at the Midlands improved his overall season record to a flawless 7-0. This is Herbert's first career Wrestler of the Week selection.
