After putting the team championship race out of reach following the second session, the top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes officially clinched their third-straight NCAA Championship on the final day of the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday, March 20. Three Hawkeyes won national championships as Iowa totaled 134.5 points to clinch the team title. Wisconsin finished fourth in the team standings with 70.5 points, while Minnesota was seventh with 63 points. Ohio State was eighth with 62 points and Penn State finished ninth with 49 points. In total five conference wrestlers won individual national championships. At 125 pounds, Iowa’s Matt McDonough completed his first season with the Hawkeyes with a national championship and a 37-1 record. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year defeated Iowa State’s Andrew Long by a 3-1 decision to give the Hawkeyes their first champion of the night. An all-Big Ten final took place at 133 pounds, where Minnesota’s Jayson Ness and Iowa’s Daniel Dennis squared off for the weight class title. With a 6-4 decision, Ness won the first national championship of his career by scoring a late takedown and a near fall, all in the last 15 seconds of the bout. The second all-Big Ten final of the night occurred at 149 pounds, where Iowa’s Brent Metcalf met Ohio State’s Lance Palmer in a rematch of the Big Ten Championships. At the conference meet, Palmer ended Metcalf’s bid for a perfect season by defeating the Hawkeye in the conference final. At the national meet, Metcalf got his revenge with a 3-2 decision to clinch his second national championship, having won the 149-pound crown in 2008. The third of the all-Big Ten finals at the NCAA Championships occurred at 165 pounds, where Wisconsin’s Andrew Howe faced Penn State’s Dan Vallimont. The Badger completed his quest for a perfect season, defeating Vallimont by way of a 9-3 decision to finish the 2009-10 campaign with a 37-0 record. The third of Iowa’s national championship performances came at 174 pounds, where Jay Borschel knocked off the weight class’ No. 1 seed, Mack Lewens of Cornell. Borschel’s 6-2 win clinched the first national championship of his career and helped put a wrap on Iowa’s third-straight national championship and 23rd in program history. At the Big Ten Championships, Iowa won its 34th conference title and third in a row after nine of its wrestlers finish in fourth place or higher, on the final day of the 2010 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Iowa finished with 156.5 points and had a pair of individual champions en route to victory. Minnesota earned runner-up honors with 119.5 points, while Wisconsin was third with 109 points and Ohio State was fourth with 102.5 points.
