Four Big Ten wrestling squads will open the 2005-06 campaign this week, including three at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday. A day prior to Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue competing in Ypsilanti, Mich., Wisconsin will travel to Green Bay for a dual match against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
The Badgers, who finished 15th at the NCAA Championships last season, will battle their intrastate foe at 1 p.m.
Michigan, the defending national runner-up and Big Ten regular season dual champion, will join the Spartans and Boilermakers in an event that featured over 300 wrestlers last year.
The Big Ten boasted the largest-conference contingent in the USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Preseason Team Rankings, released October 27, as nine of the 11 schools rank in the nation's top 20. Michigan leads all conference squads at No. 3, followed by Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota to round out the top six. Northwestern and Penn State are 11th and 12th, respectively, while Wisconsin (15), Indiana (16) and Michigan State (19) are the other league representatives. Purdue is currently receiving votes outside the top 25.
The remaining league schools begin their 2005-06 campaigns in the coming weeks.
