NU's 2007 NCAA Champion returns to claim top honors at the Michigan State Open
Northwestern's Jake Herbert garners his fifth career weekly accolade after opening his senior campaign with an unblemished 4-0 record at the Michigan State Open, claiming the 184-pound division. The 2007 national champion returned to the mats for the Wildcats after a year spent training for the Beijing Olympics, leading NU to one of its three open division finals on the day. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Herbert posted pins in each of his first three contests to secure a spot in the finals where he defeated freshman Zac Thomusseit of Pittsburgh with a 14-1 major decision.
Herbert's decisive victory improves his career record to 119-4 (.967) to lead Northwestern in the all-time records book. Next week the veteran will look to lead his team to another tournament title as Northwestern heads to West Lafayette, Ind., where it will compete in the Purdue Duals.
