Illinois' Angela Bizzarri and Minnesota’s Hassan Mead captured top-five finishes at Saturday’s Pre-National Invitational in Terre, Haute, Ind. The meet is held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, the same facility that will play host to the NCAA Championships in November.

Junior Hassan Mead earned his second weekly accolade of the 2009 season on the heels of a fifth-place finish at the Pre-NCAA Meet last week. The Golden Gopher All-American clocked a time of 23 minutes, 49.2 seconds over a soft and muddy course to lead the Maroon and Gold to an 11th-place finish. A year ago, Mead set the Minnesota 8-kilometer record at the Gibson Course with a time of 23:33.1.

Women’s Cross Country Runners of the Week:
Angela Bizzarri, Illinois

Senior and seven-time All-American Angela Bizzarri won the Pre-National Invitational with an impressive six-kilometer time of 20:27.8, besting a vast field that was comprised of 247 competitors. Bizzarri was almost 20 seconds behind at the three-kilometer split, but battled her way to the front of the pack to win the race by almost two full seconds. The meet marked the highest showing of the year thus far for the Mason, Ohio native, who improved her time from last year’s Pre-NCAA invite by 20 seconds. Her performance also piloted the Illini to a fifth-place finish out of 37 teams. This is the second weekly laurel for Bizzarri, who garnered her first after claiming top honors in her collegiate debut at the Brissman-Lundeen Invite in September of 2006.
