Purdue remains the winningest program at the Big Ten Tournament,as it improves to 22-6 all-time at the event. Indiana falls to 11-11 in Big Ten Tournament play. Purdue advances to its conference-record eighth appearance in the Big Ten Tournament title game. The Boilermakers have captured five of the 11 conference tournament championships, the last coming in 2004. The Boilermakers are 8-1 in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The squad's only loss came in 2002 to Indiana, who went on to win the crown that year. Indiana falls to 1-3 in semifinal action. With Purdue's victory, No. 2 seeds remain perfect against No. 6 seeds in the Big Ten Tournament. No. 2 seeds are 7-0 against No. 6 seeds all-time. No. 2 seeds are also 20-7 overall, while No. 6 seeds are 15-13. Purdue won the rubber match of the season series with its victory over IU in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The two teams split the regular-season series, with Indiana winning at Purdue, 63-61, in overtime on Feb. 19, 2006, and the Boilermakers winning in Bloomington, Ind., 61-56 in overtime on Jan. 5, 2006.
Indiana falls to 2-9 versus ranked opponents this season. Purdue held IU to its lowest point production in a Big Ten Tournament game. The 41 points lowered the mark of 44, which IU scored against Ohio State in the first round of the 2000 tournament. The 41 points also was a season low for IU, and the lowest point production for the Hoosiers since scoring 35 against Minnesota on Feb. 24, 2005. Indiana's Cyndi Valentin hit a pair of three-point field goals against Purdue. The two treys move her into third place on the Hoosiers' career three-point field goals made list with 168. She moves past Kristi Green (1996-99), who had 167 during her career. The Hoosiers set a team Big Ten Tournament record for three-point field goals attempts with 44 during the 2006 tournament. The previous record for IU was 43 set in 1997. The 44 three-point field goal attempts also ranks ninth on the Big Ten single tournament list. It is the most attempted by a team at the tournament since Penn State shot 45 at the 2004 event. Indiana set a team Big Ten Tournament record with 29 steals during the 2006 event. The number betters the previous school mark of 23 set in 2002. The 29 steals also ranks in a tie for eighth on the Big Ten single tournament list with Iowa, who had 29 in 1997. Indiana's Angela Hawkins moved into a tie for third on the career rebounds list at the Big Ten Tournament. Hawkins finished with 16 rebounds at the 2006 tournament to bring her career total to 77. Katie Douglas (1998-01) and Shereka Wright of Purdue (2001-04) are also third with 77 career rebounds at the event. Ohio State's Courtney Coleman holds the record with 82 during her career from 2000-03. Indiana's Jenny DeMuth established an Indiana Big Ten Tournament record for steals in a single tournament with nine swipes during the 2006 event. The mark also ties for ninth on the overall Big Ten single tournament list. The last player to record nine steals in a tournament was Kristin Haynie of MSU who did it in 2005. DeMuth moved into a tie for 10th on the career Big Ten Tournament blocks list. With her block against Purdue in the semifinals, her career total improved to 11. She is tied with Casey Leonhardt of Illinois (1997-98) and Reicina Russell of Penn State (2004) for 10th. Ohio State's Jessica Davenport set the career record earlier on Sunday with six against Michigan State, bringing her career total to 19 at the Big Ten Tournament. DeMuth attempted 18 free throws during the 2006 Big Ten Tournament. The number established a new Indiana high at the conference event. It broke the previous record of 16 set by Jill Chapman during the 2001 tournament. Indiana was whistled for 29 fouls during the semifinals against Purdue. The total ranks as the third-highest single-game total in Big Ten Tournament history. The last team to have more than 29 fouls was Minnesota against Illinois on March 1, 1997. Indiana's Whitney Thomas finished with 10 rebounds against Purdue, which marked the eighth time this season she recorded double-digit rebounds. Purdue is 5-1 on neutral courts this season. The Boiler defense limited Indiana to just 10 points in the first half, the lowest by an opponent this season. The previous low was 12 points by Mississippi State on Dec. 20. It was the lowest half-time point total for Indiana since Ohio State held the Hoosiers to eight on Jan. 20, 2005. Indianapolis native and Purdue senior Ashley Mays made her fourth appearance of the year against the Hoosiers in the semifinals. Mays finished with one point. |
