Big Ten All-Stars Double-Up Logan Thunder, 114-57, On 2004 Big Ten Women's Basketball Foreign Tour
June 15, 2004
PARK RIDGE, Ill. - In impressive and record-breaking fashion Tuesday, the Big Ten All-Stars doubled-up the Logan Thunder, 114-57, to claim their third-consecutive win on the 2004 Big Ten Women's Basketball Foreign Tour in Australia. The win marked the largest point total (114) and the second largest margin of victory (57) in the 12-year history of the Tour. The previous bests (113, 90) were set during the 1995 Tour in Japan when the All-Stars defeated the Yokosuka Lady Hawks, 113-23. In Tuesday's win, five Conference student-athletes scored in double figures, led by Michigan State's Lindsay Bowen. The sophomore finished with 20 points, marking her second-straight game in which she eclipsed the 20-point mark. Bowen recorded a Tour-high 22 points in an 84-51 victory over NSW Waratahs on Saturday. Through three of the four games of the 11-day Tour, Bowen leads the All-Stars with a 17.7 scoring average. Ohio State's Jessica Davenport recorded her third consecutive game of 15 points or more, finishing with 16 points and eight rebounds. The 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year is currently averaging 15.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game on the Tour. Jenny DeMuth of Indiana followed Davenport in the scoring line as the Hoosier junior added in 15 points and three assists. For the third straight contest, Penn State's Amanda Brown nearly missed a double-double, as the freshman finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Brown recorded eight points and eight caroms in each of her first two games, and currently leads the Big Ten Tour squad with 8.3 rebounds per game. Making her impression on All-Stars' head coach Kathi Bennett is Purdue's Sharika Webb. No stranger to Bennett, who coaches at rival Indiana, Webb has led the Big Ten squad in assists in each of the three games. Webb produced six assists on Tuesday for the second straight game and is currently averaging 5.0 per game. Bennett was also pleased to see her senior, Jamie Gathing, return to form on Tuesday. Gathing, who is coming off a knee injury that kept her from participating this past season, finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Stephanie Gandy also turned in her best performance of the Tour, as the Michigan senior recorded nine points, five rebounds and two assists. The All-Stars (3-0) stormed out to a commanding lead in the first half, just as they did in their two prior games, and took a 65-29 lead into halftime. Tuesday's first-half total equaled the All-Stars' final score from their first game, a 65-43 win over Parramatta ABA on June 10. The Big Ten squad is outscoring its opponents by 24 points in the first half and has a margin of victory of over 37 points. The Big Ten Foreign Tour squad has gone 45-18 since the inception of the Tour in 1992. The summer trip has been held annually except for 2003. The All-Stars will look to complete an undefeated trip - their first since they produced an unblemished 5-0 mark in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2002 - on Wednesday against the Southern District Spartans. The game will be played at 6 p.m. local time. CLICK HERE for more information on the 2004 Big Ten Women's Basketball Foreign Tour, including complete roster and schedule.
