On Any Given Sunday
All five Big Ten women's basketball games on Sunday featured wins by the team ranked lower in the conference standings. Highlighting the schedule, Indiana, tied for seventh in the Big Ten at the time of the game, knocked off first-place Ohio State, marking the highest-ranked opponent the Hoosiers have beaten under head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. Second-place Penn State also fell, beaten by seventh-place Michigan. Ninth-place Iowa downed third-place Purdue, while Illinois and Northwestern, both tied for 10th, defeated Minnesota (sixth) and Wisconsin (tied for third), respectively.
Everyone's a Winner
Last week, the 2009-10 group of Big Ten women's basketball teams became the first in conference history to each win 10 or more games in a season. After the weekend's games, every Big Ten team will now finish with at least 11 victories. In addition, every squad has at least four conference wins, a feat which has happened just once previously (1988-89) in the Big Ten. Never before has every Big Ten team won five or more conference games.
Top to Bottom
The Big Ten is the only conference in the nation with all its teams boasting a .364 or better winning percentage in conference games. The Big Ten joins the Big 12 as the only two conferences with all their teams at or above .500 on the year.
Big Ten Celebrates Black History Month
Throughout the month of February, the Big Ten will commemorate the achievements of African-Americans on Big Ten campuses with feature stories on its Black History Month website. Among the former student-athletes to be recognized are seven women's basketball players. On Wednesday, the Big Ten will honor former Northwestern standout Ifeoma Okonkwo. Okonkwo persevered through some trying times during college, and is now playing professionally in Portugal. Read her full story on www.Bigten.org, beginning Wednesday.
