Six Big Ten Women’s Basketball Students Named Academic All-District
Feb. 22, 2018

Six Big Ten women’s basketball students representing four conference schools have earned Academic All-District honors, it was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Four of the six honorees collected first-team Academic All-District recognition, making them eligible for Academic All-America consideration, with those selections made next month.

Indiana’s Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill, Maryland’s Kristen Confroy and Minnesota’s Carlie Wagner earned first-team Academic All-District plaudits on Thursday, while Ohio State’s Stephanie Mavunga and Kelsey Mitchell were second-team Academic All-District honorees.

Cahill, Confroy and Wagner are three-time Academic All-District selections, with Cahill and Wagner going on to be named third-team Academic All-Americans last year. Meanwhile, Mavunga and Mitchell were chosen for Academic All-District recognition for the first time in their respective careers.

Five of this year’s women’s basketball Academic All-District selections are also two-time Academic All-Big Ten honorees, with Buss, Cahill, Confroy, Wagner and Mitchell all receiving that distinction in 2016 and 2017 (with the 2018 teams pending). Mavunga, who sat out the 2015-16 season as a transfer from North Carolina, earned her first Academic All-Big Ten certificate last year.

What’s more, Cahill and Confroy are two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholars (2016 and 2017), with Mavunga and Mitchell receiving that award for the first time last year.

Of the six Big Ten women’s basketball students to earn Academic All-District status on Thursday, four (Buss, Cahill, Mavunga and Mitchell) were selected from District 5, which covers the state of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Confroy was named in District 2 (Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.), while Wagner emerged from District 6 (Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin).
