Game Nine No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 5 Penn State
Ohio State and Penn State have met seven times in the Big Ten Tournament, with the Lady Lions owning a slight 4-3 advantage. The Buckeyes have won the last two games, including a 64-46 win in the quarterfinals last season with Ohio State as the No. 1 seed and Penn State as the No. 8 seed.
The Buckeyes and Lady Lions have played twice in the semifinals. In 2003, Ohio State, the No. 4 seed, upset No. 1 Penn State in the semis, 72-61. The two squads also met in the 1996 semifinals, with the No. 1 Lady Lions defeating the No. 6 Buckeyes 84-70.
With its win over Indiana, Ohio State has advanced in all 13 Big Ten Tournaments to date. The Buckeyes have now won four consecutive Big Ten Tournament games.
Penn State advanced in the Big Ten Tournament for the 11th time after beating Illinois.
Ohio State is 19-11 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes have reached the semfinal round for the fifth consecutive year. Ohio State claimed its first tournament championship last year after beating No. 2 Purdue 63-60.
The Lady Lions are 20-10 in Big Ten Tournament play. PSU has reached the semifinals 10 times and is 6-3 in previous semifinal games. The last time Penn State was in the semis was 2005, when the Lions were knocked off by eventual champion Michigan State, 83-76.
The Buckeyes are 3-4 all-time in the semifinals. Ohio State played for the title in 2003 and 1995, in addition to winning the crown in 2006. In 2003, OSU was defeated by Purdue (67-61) and in 1995 the Buckeyes lost to Penn State (68-63).
Penn State leads the all-time series with Ohio State, 30-14. However, the Buckeyes have claimed the previous six meetings between the two teams, including two winss this season. OSU edged the Lions, 63-61, in State College back on Jan. 11 before earning the sweep with a 78-61 victory Feb. 22 in Columbus to ensure the Big Ten title. The last time PSU defeated the Buckeyes was Dec. 30, 2005, a 69-62 win at the Bryce Jordan Center.
