USBWA All-Americans

March 30, 2017

All-America honors continue to roll in for Big Ten women’s basketball students, as three conference standouts earned All-America citations from the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Wednesday afternoon.

Maryland’s Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, and Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell were chosen for the 10-player team, which has been selected annually by the national sportswriters’ organization for the past 30 seasons.

All three Big Ten students named to this year’s USBWA All-America Team also earned All-America recognition from the Associated Press on Monday, with Mitchell adding a place on the John R. Wooden Award All-America Team that day. In addition, the trio received second-team All-America accolades from espnW earlier this month.

With Wednesday’s announcement, a student from a current Big Ten school has now earned USBWA All-America honors for 17 consecutive seasons, including multiple honorees the past six years.

Jones, who is a finalist for the Naismith Award as the national player of the year, finished her career with a Big Ten-record .650 career field goal percentage, eclipsing the previous mark of .608 set by Purdue’s Camille Cooper from 1998-2001. Jones also ranks fourth in Big Ten history with 1,209 rebounds.

Mitchell, who is a finalist for four national player of the year awards — the USBWA’s Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, the Wade Trophy, the Naismith Award and the Wooden Award — as well as the Dawn Staley Award (nation’s top guard) and Nancy Lieberman Award (nation’s top point guard), ranks fifth in Big Ten history with 2,553 career points heading into her senior season in 2017-18. She also holds the Big Ten record with 368 career three-point field goals made, topping the previous standard of 365 by Penn State’s Maggie Lucas from 2010-14.

Walker-Kimbrough owns the Big Ten record with a .459 career three-point percentage, outdistancing the prior standard of .428 set by Ohio State’s Brittany Johnson from 2008-11. Walker-Kimbrough also ranks 18th in conference history with 2,156 career points.

Walker-Kimbrough and Michigan State’s Tori Jankoska will represent the Big Ten at the Marines’ Women’s 3-Point Championship at 10 p.m. (ET) Thursday at GCU Arena in Phoenix. The event will be televised live on ESPN.
