PARK RIDGE, IL - Five Big Ten women's basketball teams are ranked in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released Wednesday, November 3. The League's five-team delegation is the largest among all conferences. Ohio State, voted the preseason favorite last month by the Big Ten coaches, is ranked ninth in the nation, tied with Texas Tech. A trio of Big Ten programs is ranked in the middle of the poll as Minnesota is 14th, followed by No. 15 Purdue and No. 16 Michigan State. Penn State rounds out the League's representatives at No. 21.

Last season's final coaches' poll ranked only three Big Ten squads in Minnesota (No. 4), Penn State (No. 6) and Purdue (No. 9). Ohio State, which ended its 2003-04 campaign with a 21-10 record, received votes outside the top 25 in the final poll along with Michigan State.

It was announced last month that the Buckeyes were the Big Ten coaches' preseason favorite, followed by Michigan State and Minnesota. Purdue, the two-time defending Big Ten Tournament champion, earned the top-rank by the League's media attending the Conference's annual media day. Ohio State was voted second and two-time defending Big Ten champion Penn State ranked third.

The 2004-05 campaign gets underway for Conference teams next week with three teams in action. Ohio State opens at home against Bowling Green at 7 p.m. ET, November 12, in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, while Minnesota, a 2004 Final Four participant, will face UNLV at 1 p.m. PT at the WBCA Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday, November 14. Also opening its season on Sunday is Penn State. The Lady Lions will travel to Austin, Texas to face the Texas Longhorns in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic at 4 p.m. ET, which will air live on ESPN2.
