Four Big Ten Squads Tabbed in AP Top 25 Preseason Poll
Nov. 8, 2005
PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Four Big Ten women's basketball teams are ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 Preseason Poll, which was released Tuesday, Nov. 8. It is the 500th poll to be released by the AP since its inception in 1976. Two conference squads are ranked in the nation's top 10, with Ohio State fourth and defending national finalist Michigan State 10th. Minnesota, a Final Four squad from two years ago, is rated 16th, while Purdue earned a top-20 spot at No. 19.
The Buckeyes have claimed the No. 4 rank in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, which was released last week. The coaches voted Michigan State 11th, Minnesota was tabbed 17th and Purdue was placed 23rd.
It was announced two weeks ago at Big Ten Media Day that the league coaches and 22-member media panel selected the Buckeyes as the conference's preseason favorite, followed by Michigan State in both polls. Minnesota was tabbed third by the coaches, while the media chose Purdue.
The 2005-06 campaign gets underway for conference teams this week, when Michigan travels to Eugene, Ore., for the Women's Sports Foundation Basketball Challenge. The Wolverines will open against No. 20/21 Temple on Friday, followed by a matchup against St. Francis or Oregon the next night.
