Minnesota's McCarville and Five Big Ten Squads Earn Preseason Nods by Associated Press

PARK RIDGE, IL - Minnesota senior center Janel McCarville was honored Tuesday, November 9, as one of five student-athletes named to the Associated Press All-America team, while five Big Ten teams were ranked in AP Preseason Women's Basketball Top 25 Poll.  The League's five-team delegation is the largest among all conferences.  The Big Ten coaches' preseason favorite, Ohio State, is tied for 10th in the nation with Notre Dame.  Four League teams claimed the identical preseason spots they were given last week in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll.   Minnesota is 14th, followed by No. 15 Purdue and No. 16 Michigan StatePenn State rounds out the League's representatives at No. 21.

In the final AP poll of 2003-04, which was released prior to the NCAA Championship on March 17, all five teams ranked this season were listed among the top 25 as well, with Purdue (No. 3) and Penn State (No. 5) sharing spots in the nation's top five.  Ohio State was 21st, followed by No. 23 Michigan State and No. 24 Minnesota.  The Golden Gophers went on to compete in the school's first-ever Final Four.

McCarville, a Wade Trophy and Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Candidate, as well as a Preseason Wooden Award All-American, was voted to the AP squad by a national panel.  The Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, who averaged 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds in her junior year, joins LSU's Seimone Augustus, Kansas State's Kendra Wecker, Tennessee's Shyra Ely and Notre Dame's Jacqueline Batteast on the All-America team.  McCarville was an AP All-America honorable mention last year.

Three Big Ten squads - Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State - will tip-off the 2004-05 campaign this weekend.  The Buckeyes open at home against Bowling Green at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, November 12, in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, while Minnesota faces UNLV at 1 p.m. PT at the WBCA Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday, November 14.  Penn State travels to Austin, Texas to face the Texas Longhorns in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic at 4 p.m. ET, which will air live on ESPN2.
