Big Ten Field Hockey Opens This Weekend

Park Ridge, Ill. - The 2010 Big Ten field hockey campaign will begin this weekend as six of the seven conference teams will be in action.
Two Big Ten teams will kick off their season on Friday, beginning with Northwestern as the Wildcats travel to No. 8 Syracuse before facing Northeastern on Saturday. Also on Friday, No. 18 Penn State will visit No. 16 Old Dominion, concluding the weekend by taking on NCAA Tournament semifinalist No. 3 Virginia.
Five more Big Ten teams will open their year with games on Saturday. After tying for second in the Big Ten in 2009, Indiana begins 2010 by facing No. 9 Boston College, while No. 19 Iowa will face No. 6 Wake Forest in the opener of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Michigan also opens its season in the Challenge, taking on defending national champion No. 1 North Carolina. Defending Big Ten Tournament Champion No. 7 Michigan State starts its season by hosting the Champions Invitational. The Spartans face Central Michigan on Saturday and take on the winner of No. 10 Duke and No. 13 Louisville on Sunday.
The Big Ten/ACC Challenge will continue into Sunday when Iowa will take on North Carolina and Michigan faces Wake Forest. Penn State visits Virginia, while Indiana finishes its weekend play by traveling to Massachusetts.
After advancing to the NCAA Championship in 2009, No. 14 Ohio State starts its 2010 season when the Buckeyes travel to Ohio on Tuesday, Aug. 31.
The Big Ten conference season begins Sept. 24 with the Big Ten Tournament to be played Nov. 4 at Northwestern.
