Big Ten Announces Field Hockey Players of the Week

Aug. 27, 2007

Offensive Player of the Week

Kiersten Wood, Penn State

Sr., MF, Lititz, Pa./Warwick

Wood was the offensive spark in No. 7 Penn State's pair of road wins at Old Dominion and Virginia. Wood recorded two shots and had the assist on the eventual game-winning goal to upset No. 6 ODU, 3-1. On Sunday, Wood ignited the Nittany Lions second half-offensive explosion, scoring two of three unanswered goals to defeat No. 8 Virginia, 3-1. Wood's second goal of the day was the game winner. Wood leads PSU in scoring with five points and co-leads the team with two goals. She picks up the second weekly award of her career (10/31/05).

Last PSU Offensive POW:  Shaun Banta (9/18/06)

Defensive Player of the Week

Laura Cahill, Penn State

So., B, Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville

Cahill picks up the first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolade after helping to hold both No. 6 Old Dominion and No. 8 Virginia to one goal apiece on their own fields. Playing in her home state, the Virginia Beach, Va., native was not kind to the Virginia schools, aggressively stopping or slowing down offensive attacks by both teams as the No. 7 Nittany Lions rolled to decisive wins to open the season. Cahill's efforts helped PSU claim its first season-opening victory since the 2003 campaign. This is Cahill's first player of the week award.
