Big Ten Conference Announces Weekly Field Hockey Awards

The conference office announced on Monday the second weekly field hockey award winners for the 2010 season. Northwestern sophomore Chelsea Armstrong earned honors on offense after posting a pair of two-goal games during the week, while Ayla Halus gave the Penn State Nittany Lions their second straight accolade as she earned Defensive Player of the Week. Michigan State's Katherine Jamieson earned her first Freshman of the Week honors.
Offensive Player of the Week
Chelsea Armstrong earns her fourth career Offensive Player of the Week award after posting a pair of two-goal games. Armstrong was a constant threat in Northwestern's 4-1 victory at Colgate on Monday, recording 15 total shots and eight shots on goal. Armstrong picked up one assist Friday vs. Virginia Commonwealth before closing the week by scoring twice in the first 12 minutes of Northwestern's match at William & Mary. She later assisted on the Wildcats' fourth goal of the game to raise her Big Ten-leading points total to 15. With six goals in five games this season, Armstrong now has 28 goals in 26 career games at Northwestern.

Defensive Player of the Week
Ayla Halus earns her first career award after picking up her third straight double-digit save performance to start the season, all which have come against ranked foes. Halus recorded her second double-digit save half of the season, stopping 10 shots in the first half against No. 5 Connecticut to keep the Lions in the game. The sophomore tallied 12 saves overall in the contest. Halus has an 87.5 save percentage, stopping 35 of 40 shots thus far.

Freshman Player of the Week
Katherine Jamieson, Michigan State

Spartan freshman Katherine Jamieson earns the first weekly honor of her career after tallying one goal and a game-tying assist on the weekend. On Friday, she scored the game-winning goal with 1:48 remaining in regulation to help MSU to a 4-3 win over California. Jamieson also had an assist on a Joelle van Ireland score in the Spartans' 10-0 victory against Pacific on Saturday.
