Penn State Earns Share of Big Ten Field Hockey Championship

With Penn State’s 6-1 win over Michigan State on Saturday afternoon, the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions clinched a share of the Big Ten Championship. Penn State earns its first Big Ten Championship since 2008 and sixth overall.

With Penn State leading 2-1 after the first half, the Nittany Lions scored four second-half goals en route to the Big Ten title. Sophomore Laura Gebhart scored Penn State’s first goal in the fourth minute, while fellow sophomore Taylor Herold notched a goal in the 15th minute. The Nittany Lions tallied four goals in less than 10 minutes in the second half, as juniors Lauren Purvis (53rd minute), Whitney Reddig and Brittany Grzywacz (57th minute) found the net. Herold added her second goal of the match in the 60th minute.

Penn State finishes the regular season with a 5-1 conference slate and a 15-3 overall record, and will find out its seed for next week’s Big Ten Tournament when the regular season concludes on Sunday.
