Michigan Earns Fifth Big Ten Title and Top Seed in 2007 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament
Oct. 28, 2007
Park Ridge, Ill. - With a win over Northwestern on Oct. 21, Michigan captured its fifth Big Ten Championship in program history, finishing the conference season with a perfect 6-0 record. The conference title guarantees the Wolverines a spot in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals with a first round bye. The 2007 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament will take place in Columbus, Ohio, on the Ohio State University campus.
The Wolverines beat the Wildcats, 3-2, in the clinching game. Sophomore Kelly Fitzpatrick was the hero for Michigan as she scored the winning goal with just 1:40 remaining in regulation to propel her team to the win. This is the first time the Wolverines have claimed the outright regular-season championship since 2002.
Michigan State is seeded No. 2 in the tournament bracket after finishing the conference season with a 5-1 mark. The Spartans' only loss was to Michigan during a matchup on Oct. 3 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan State claimed the second spot in its final game of the season with a win over Iowa.
The loss to the Spartans gave the Hawkeyes the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Iowa comes into the 2007 postseason as defending Big Ten Tournament Champions. As last year's No. 5 seed, the Hawkeyes defeated a higher seed in every game to win the 2006 tournament.
Penn State is the No. 4 seed after defeating Ohio State on Oct. 28, dropping the Buckeyes to the No. 5 spot. The two schools will meet again on Thursday in the opening round of the tournament with the game beginning at Noon ET on Thursday, Nov. 1.
Rounding out the field is No. 6 Indiana and No. 7 Northwestern. The Wildcats will face off against Michigan State in Game 1 of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. ET. The Hoosiers will battle Iowa in the last game of the day at 2 p.m. ET.
Top-seeded Michigan will await the winner of No. 4 Iowa and No. 5 Ohio State. The Wolverines will play their semifinal game on Friday, Nov. 2 at Noon ET. The second semifinal game will begin at 2 p.m. ET on Friday with the tournament finale taking place on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. ET
