Nov. 4, 2012 Penn State Earns Second Consecutive Big Ten Tournament Championship The No. 1 seeded Penn State field hockey team claimed its second consecutive Big Ten Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon with the 2-0 defeat of No. 3 seed Michigan. It is the sixth Championship Title for the Nittany Lions (17-3, 5-1 Big Ten), more than any other school in the history of the Big Ten. The Lions earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Michigan Advances Past Ohio State, Will Face Indiana on Friday The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of a redirection goal deep early in the second half to earn a 1-0 victory against Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 1) at Iowa's Grant Field. The victory extended U-M's win streak to seven straight games. RECAP over Northwestern The Indiana field hockey team continued its winning ways against Northwestern in postseason play, as the No. 7 seeded Hoosiers upset the No. 2 seeded Wildcats, 4-0, in the quarterfinal game of the 2012 Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa this afternoon. The win improves the Hoosiers' record to 3-0 against NU in Big Ten Tournament play and is the first postseason win for IU since 2009, where Indiana defeated Penn State, 3-1, in the semifinal round and went on to play in the championship game. Freshman Natalie Cafone's game-winning goal in the 80th minute lifted the 11th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 22 Michigan State on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big Ten Tournament at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes will next face top-seeded Penn State in a Friday semifinal.
