Michigan State Earns Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Title

The third-seeded Michigan State field hockey team claimed the Big Ten Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over No. 5 seed Iowa at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans (12-9, 4-2 Big Ten) won their fourth Big Ten Tournament title and the first since 2009. With the victory, Michigan State earned the Big Ten’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans erased a two-goal first-half deficit to post the comeback win. Abby Barker scored two goals for Michigan State, while Adelle Lever notched the game-winner in the 62nd minute.

Big Ten Tournament Championship Match is Underway

The Big Ten Tournament Championship game is underway in Columbus, Ohio. Third-seeded Michigan State faces fifth-seeded Iowa for the crown and the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.



 

 

No. 3 Michigan State Edges No. 7 Ohio State, 2-1 (2OT)

Third-seeded Michigan State pulled out a 2-1 double overtime victory over host and seventh-seeded Ohio State on Friday afternoon in the second semifinal of the Big Ten Tournament. Katherine Jamieson notched a goal in regulation (40th minute) while Allie Ahern scored the game-winner in overtime for the Spartans. Michigan State will face No. 5 Iowa in the championship match on Sunday at Noon ET. The game will be shown live on BTN.

No. 5 Iowa Downs No. 1 Penn State, 4-3 (OT)

Fifth-seeded Iowa erased an early two-goal deficit to defeat top-seed Penn State, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Natalie Cafone scored two goals for the Hawkeyes, including the game-winner in overtime, while Marike Stribos and Dani Hemeon also found the back of the net. Iowa advances to Sunday's championship match at Noon ET.

2013 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Semifinals Underway

The Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament semifinals has begun in Columbus, Ohio with No. 1 Penn State taking on No. 5 Iowa in the first match of the day. Game two, featuring No. 7 Ohio State against No. 3 Michigan State, is scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m. ET. The first match will be broadcasted live on Big Ten Network, while the second will air on tape-delay at 11:30 p.m. ET tonight.

Third-seeded Michigan State got on the board early and often as the Spartans cruised to a 6-0 victory over sixth-seeded Indiana in Friday's last quarterfinal game. Abby Barker registered a hat trick, while Claire Johnson, Adelle Lever and Mallory Tyler notched individual goals to propel Michigan State to a semifinal match against No. 7 Ohio State on Friday at 12:30 p.m. ET.

No. 7 Ohio State Edges No. 2 Northwestern, 3-2

Host and seventh-seeded Ohio State edged Big Ten co-Champion and second-seeded Northwestern, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Buckeyes scored the first three goals of the game to hold on for the 3-2 victory. Peanut Johnson, Brooke Hiltz and Mona Frommhold tallied scores for Ohio State. The Buckeyes advance to face the Michigan State-Indiana winner in Friday's semifinal at 12:30 p.m. ET.

No. 5 Iowa Defeats No. 4 Michigan, 1-0

Big Ten Freshman of the Year Stephanie Norlander's goal in the 58th minute lifted the 20th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Michigan on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Big Ten Tournament at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Hawkeyes will face top-seeded Penn State in a Friday semifinal at 10 a.m. ET.
