Four Big Ten Field Hockey Teams Earn Bids to 2011 NCAA Championship

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – Four Big Ten teams will compete in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship, it was announced on Tuesday. Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State earned berths to the national tournament, with each team opening play on Saturday.
Iowa makes its 21st appearance in the national tournament after putting together a 15-4 record during the regular season. The Hawkeyes will travel to College Park, Md., to take on Maryland in their first-round match.
Big Ten champion Michigan makes its second consecutive and 10th overall appearance in the NCAA Championship after recording a 14-6 record in the regular season. The Wolverines visit Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on New Hampshire in their first match.
Ohio State makes its third straight tournament appearance and seventh overall after finishing the regular season with a 12-8 record. The Buckeyes go to Norfolk, Va., to take on No. 2 seed Old Dominion in the first round.
After winning its fifth Big Ten Tournament title, Penn State will visit Storrs, Conn. to take on Northeastern in opening-round play. The Nittany Lions put together a 16-5 record during the regular season en route to their second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and their 26th overall.
The first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship will be played on Saturday with the quarterfinals scheduled for Sunday. The semifinals will be held on Nov. 18 and the national championship will take place on Nov. 20 in Louisville, Ky.
