Three Big Ten teams represented the conference at the 2009 NCAA Championship as Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State were part of the 16-team field, marking the 10th time in the last 11 seasons the conference sent three or more teams to the national tournament. Leading the Big Ten contingent in 2009 was Michigan State, who finished the regular season as the Big Ten Champion. Also winners of the Big Ten Tournament, the Spartans won Big Ten Offensive Player and Coach of the Year honors behind the efforts of senior Floor Rijpma and head man Rolf van de Kerkhof. The two were also named NFHCA West Region Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. Other conference award winners for the 2009 season included Iowa's Meghan Beamesderfer as Defensive Player of the Year and Ohio State's Berta Queralt as Freshman of the Year. In 2009, five Big Ten student-athletes were named All-American, 21 named All-Region, and 73 were Academic All-Big Ten selections.
