Big Ten Women's Golf Begins Spring Schedule This Weekend

The spring portion of the Big Ten women's golf season gets underway this weekend, with Illinois taking to the course for the first time in 2011. The Fighting Illini open their schedule on Saturday at the Illinois Challenge in Venice, Fla., while the remaining conference squads will begin the year in February. The Lady Puerto Rico Classic will mark the beginning of the spring slate for five Big Ten teams, as Indiana, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn State and host Purdue will compete in Rio Grande, P.R., on Feb. 13-15. Minnesota also opens play on Feb. 13, traveling to Sorrento, Fla., for the UCF Challenge. Michigan State and Ohio State will begin the 2011 season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., on Feb. 14-16. Iowa will travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-22, while Wisconsin hits the course on Feb. 27 for the Kinderlou Forest Challenge in Valdosta, Ga. The 2011 Big Ten Championships, hosted by Northwestern, will take place April 22-24 at the Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. NCAA Regionals are set for May 5-7, with the NCAA Championships following on May 17-20. Six Big Ten teams closed the fall schedule ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50. Reigning national champion Purdue leads the way at No. 5, followed by Michigan State at No. 19, Ohio State at No. 25, Minnesota at No. 42, Northwestern at No. 43 and Wisconsin at No. 50.
