2012 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships Release

French Lick Resort will play host to the 2012 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships this weekend as all 12 conference teams head to French Lick, Ind., to compete for the conference title. The course will feature a par-72, 6,156-yard format for the championships.

The championships begin on Friday at the Donald Ross Course with first round action beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Saturday’s second round will also begin at 9 a.m., with the final on Sunday set for 8 a.m.

The field for this year’s championships includes 15 of the top 20 finishers from last year’s event, including nine of the top 10 from a year ago. The top-four teams from last year return two or more top- 10 finishers from 2011. Defending champion Michigan State returns Caroline Powers (fourth) and Lindsey Solberg (fifth), while runner-up finisher Purdue welcomes back Laura Gonzalez-Escallon (sixth) and Paula Reto. Northwestern’s Lauren Weaver (second), Alex Lederhausen (third) and Devon Brown (eighth)return for the Wildcats. The Badgers’ Kris Yoo (seventh) and Lindsay Danielson (tenth) are also among the top 10 finishers returning for this year.

Four Big Ten teams hold top-50 Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings entering the weekend, led by No. 19 Ohio State. Michigan State ranks 23rd nationally, while Purdue stands at No. 33 and Northwestern holds No. 40. Individually, The Boilermakers’ Reto and Gonzalez-Escallon rank Nos. 23 and 24, respectively, while the Spartans’ Powers is No. 32 in the nation’s top 40.

The Spartans recorded a score of 1180 at the 2011 championships to earn first-place honors, followed by Purdue with 1185 and Northwestern with 1187. Wisconsin (1195) and Ohio State (1200) rounded out the top five.
