BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After the cancellation of the final round of the 2005 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships due to snow, the opening round of the 2006 event couldn't have been any brighter.  Under beautiful sunny skies and 73-degree weather in Bloomington, the Purdue Boilermakers fired a first-round 2-over-par 290 to take a three-stroke lead over four-time defending conference champion Ohio State.  The Buckeyes opened with a 5-over 293 on the par 72, 6,142-yard Indiana University Golf Course layout.  Michigan and Michigan State both fired an opening 296, which gave the in-state rivals a share for third place.  Northwestern rounded out the top five with a 297.

The Wildcats' Alice Kim, a two-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week honoree this season, stormed out of the gates Friday morning and posted a 4-under 68 to take the 18-hole lead for individual honors.

Kim began her round with six straight pars, but then birdied holes 7-9 and the 11th to storm to 4-under.  The NU senior recorded seven pars to end her round of 68, finishing the day mistake free with no bogeys.

Indiana's Elaine Harris joined Kim in red figures, as she recorded a career best 1-under 71 on her home course to earn second in the field of 66.  Five student-athletes signed for an even-par 72 in Michigan State's Sara Brown, Ohio State's Carling Coffing and Jennifer Selfinger and Purdue's Christel Boeljon and Maria Hernandez.

Rounding out the 11-team field is host Indiana (300) in sixth, followed by Iowa (301), Penn State (303), Minnesota (311), Wisconsin (313) and Illinois (321).

NOTES:  Only 65 of the 66 players in the field made it to the first tee Friday morning.  Northwestern's Katie Trachok was forced to withdraw prior to her tee-time due to illness ... Indiana's Tara Boone, who entered the postseason with an average of 80.08, posted a career low 2-over 74 in the first 18, which bettered her previous best of 78 ... The first-round average for the 65-player field was 77.40 ... five eagles were recorded in the first round, including three on par fours; eagles netted at Holes 1 (par 5), two at 6 (par 4), 12 (par 5) and 16 (par 4).
