Big Ten Women's Golf All-Conference Teams and Individual Award Winners Announced

May 1, 2012

The Big Ten Conference announced on Tuesday the women’s golf All-Conference teams and individual award winners. Purdue’s Laura Gonzalez-Escallon earned the Big Ten Player of the Year award, Ohio State’s Kendall Prince took home Freshman of the Year accolades and Michigan State’s Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll earned Coach of the Year honors.

Gonzalez-Escallon took medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships, finishing with an even-par 216 and a two-stroke advantage over the field. The Boilermaker junior’s finish marked the fifth consecutive year that a Purdue golfer won medalist honors at the event. She also received the Mary Fossum Award, given to the Big Ten player with the lowest stroke average to par during the season. Gonzalez-Escallon is the seventh Purdue golfer to be named Player of the Year and the sixth in the last seven years.

Prince collects Freshman of the Year honors after closing out the season with the highest Sagarin rating among Big Ten newcomers. She finished the regular season with a 74.44 rating, good for seventh in the conference. Prince is the seventh Buckeye to earn the award and second in the last four years, joining teammate Vicky Villanueva, who won it in 2009.

Slobodnik-Stoll earns her third Coach of the Year honor, and first since 2007, after leading the Spartans to their second consecutive Big Ten Championships crown. Michigan State shot a 21-over 885 at the championships, finished ahead by 10-strokes.

The All-Big Ten first team features conference champion Michigan State’s Caroline Powers, Nebraska’s Madeleine Sheils, Ohio State’s Amy Meier and Rachel Rohanna, and Purdue’s Gonzalez-Escallon and Paula Reto. Also earning All-Conference honors were Michigan’s Yugene Lee, Michigan State’s Liz Nagel and Lindsey Solberg, Minnesota’s Banchalee Theinthong and Ohio State’s Susana Benavides and Prince, who each received second-team honors.

The Big Ten also recognized 12 Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The complete list of honorees can be found below.
