The 2013 Big Ten women’s gymnastics season gets underway this weekend, with three of the eight conference squads competing. Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State each open their respective 2013 schedules this weekend, while Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Nebraska begin competition next weekend.
Ranked No. 10 in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Michigan begins the season on Friday when the Wolverines take on No. 9 Oregon State and BYU at the Cancun Classic. No. 14 Ohio State and No. 16 Penn State open competition on Saturday as the Buckeyes travel to Bowling Green and the Nittany Lions head to Denver.
Iowa begins its season on Jan. 11, as the Hawkeyes host Ball State. No. 18 Illinois, No. 7 Nebraska, Michigan State and No. 23 Minnesota open their 2013 campaigns on Jan. 12. The Fighting Illini take on No. 19 Arizona, No. 6 Stanford and San Jose State in Tucson, Ariz., while the Spartans host Western Michigan. Minnesota welcomes No. 17 Washington to Minneapolis, while Nebraska takes on conference foe Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
All eight Big Ten teams are ranked or are receiving votes in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches’ Poll, with six earning top-25 status entering the season. Defending Big Ten Champion and conference coaches’ favorite Nebraska leads the way at No. 7, while Michigan also appears in the top 10 at No. 10. Ohio State debuts at No. 14, followed by No. 16 Penn State, No. 18 Illinois and No. 23 Minnesota. Iowa and Michigan State are also receiving votes in the preseason poll.
