The 2012 Big Ten women's gymnastics season gets underway this weekend, with five of the eight conference squads competing. Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State each open their respective 2012 schedules this weekend, while Illinois, Michigan and Nebraska do the same next weekend.

Iowa and Michigan State open competition on Friday as the Hawkeyes take on No. 19 Arizona, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 17 Auburn and No. 12 LSU at the Cancun Classic, and the Spartans host No. 16 Washington. A pair of Big Ten squads square off on opening weekend as Minnesota hosts Ohio State on Saturday, while Penn State visits West Virginia and also faces Maryland on Sunday.

Michigan and Nebraska begin their seasons on Jan. 13, as the Wolverines host Ohio State, and the Huskers welcome Denver. Illinois hosts Minnesota on Jan. 14 for the Fighting Illini's first competition of the season.

All eight Big Ten teams are ranked or are receiving votes in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll, with seven earning top-25 status entering the season. Big Ten newcomer and conference coaches' favorite Nebraska leads the way at No. 6, while reigning Big Ten Champion Michigan also appears in the top 10 at No. 10. Penn State debuts at No. 13, followed by No. 15 Illinois, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 22 Minnesota and No. 25 Iowa. Michigan State is also receiving votes in the preseason poll.
