Women's Gymnastics Opens 2010 Season This Weekend

The Big Ten’s seven gymnastics squads open the 2010 season this weekend with four in action Friday and three on Sunday.

Friday’s action begins with Penn State, the conference coaches’ preseason pick to win the Big Ten Championship, traveling to Michigan State for a quad-meet that will also feature West Virginia and Western Michigan. Ohio State will visit Missouri, while Illinois heads to Corvallis, Ore., in a quad-meet against Air Force, Alaska and host Oregon State.

On Saturday, Iowa will face Michigan in Ann Arbor as part of a tri-meet that will also include Bowling Green. Also on Saturday, Minnesota opens the 2010 season at home, welcoming Denver.

The Big Ten Championships, hosted by Ohio State, will be held March 27, and the NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla. will be contested April 22-24.

In the preseason GymInfo Coaches Poll, Penn State ranks as the top Big Ten school at No. 11, while Michigan and Illinois trail right behind at Nos. 12 and 13, respectively. Ohio State joins the pack at No. 18, Minnesota is No. 22, and Michigan State checks into the poll at No. 24. Iowa is receiving votes outside the top 25.
