Iowa's Simbhudas and Penn State's Personett Share Weekly Award
Feb. 23, 2009
Co-Gymnasts of the Week:
Rebecca Simbhudas earns her first-ever weekly laurel on the heels of capturing her first career all-around title in Iowa's win over Iowa State last week. The Hawkeye sophomore finished first on bars (9.825) and tied for first on beam (9.850) en route to an all-around tally of 39.225 for the title crown. Her overall performance helped lead Iowa to its first season sweep over Iowa State since 1992. In Iowa's second meet of the week against Southern Utah, Simbhudas topped her previous all-around score from Monday with a 39.250 mark, good enough to put her in the runner-up spot on the winner's podium. Her beam performance of 9.925 is the highest mark on that event by any Hawkeye since Danielle Legeai received the same mark March 17, 2006, against Iowa State.
Brandi Personett, Penn State
Brandi Personett picked up her fifth individual all-around title and her seventh top-three all-around finish with a 39.450, aiding Penn State to a first place team finish in its second quad meet of the year against New Hampshire, Rutgers and Bridgeport. The Nittany Lion junior earned her sixth vault title with a 9.900, her fifth straight 9.9 or better in the event. On bars, Personett finished second with a 9.850, her third-highest score of the year, and on beam, she placed fifth with a 9.825, just shy of her season high of 9.850. Personett also captured her sixth individual crown on floor with a 9.875. The award marks Personett's third weekly laurel of the season, and the seventh of her career.
