2004 Big Ten Women's Gymnasts of the Week
March 16 Mary Skokut, SR, MINNESOTA Carmel, Ind./Carmel Skokut produced school records on both the uneven bars and balance beam at Arizona State to earn Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors for the second time this season and in her career. The Gophers senior placed first with a career-best tally of 9.975 on the bars, besting the previous program high of 9.950. She also placed third on the balance beam with an identical career-best score of 9.975, surpassing the old school record of 9.950. The three-time All-Big Ten selection is aiming to become just the second Minnesota gymnast in school history to collect All-League honors in each of her four years, joining Mindy Knaeble (1995-98) and Marie Roethlisberger (1987-90). March 9 Alexis Maday, SR, IOWA Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Maday produced a score of 39.450 in the all-around and tied for first on the floor exercise against No. 6 Utah, No. 12 Washington and Illinois-Chicago to share Big Ten Gymnast of the Week accolades. The Iowa senior produced a tally of 9.950 in the floor exercise and also finished among the top three in the vault (T3rd with 9.950) and uneven bars (T3rd with 9.925). Maday has now collected the Conference Gymnast of the Week accolade five times this season, as the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has been granted nine weekly awards in her career. Elise Ray, JR, MICHIGAN Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake Ray racked up a tally of 39.450 in the all-around and tied for first on the balance beam at top-ranked UCLA to split Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors. The Michigan junior posted a season-high score of 9.950 on the balance beam and also placed among the top five in the uneven bars (T2nd with 9.950) and vault (T5th with 9.850). After not competing last year due to injury, the two-time All-Big Ten honoree earns her second weekly laurel this season and sixth of her career. March 2 Alexis Maday, SR, IOWA Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Maday claimed the all-around title and placed first in three of four events against Minnesota on Friday in her final home meet to collect Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors. The Iowa senior posted a score of 39.675 to win the all-around while tallying a school-record score of 9.975 to win the uneven bars. She also finished first on the floor exercise (9.95), tied for the top spot on the balance beam (9.90) and tied for second on the vault (9.85). Maday has now collected the Conference Gymnast of the Week accolade four times this season, as the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has been granted eight weekly awards in her career. The three-time All-League selection is aiming to become the first Hawkeyes gymnast to earn All-Big Ten accolades in each of her four seasons on campus. February 25 Elise Ray, JR, MICHIGAN Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake Ray placed first in every event at West Virginia and claimed the all-around crown with the second-highest score of her career to earn Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors. The Michigan junior produced a tally of 39.750 to win the all-around, which marked the sixth-highest all-around total in school annals. She equaled a season-high to win the balance beam (9.975) and tied for first in the vault (9.925), floor exercise (9.925) and uneven bars (season-best 9.925). The two-time All-Big Ten honoree earns her first weekly laurel since the 2002 campaign, as she did not compete last season due to injury. The Maryland native now has five Big Ten weekly awards, as she was selected once as a freshman (Feb. 21, 2001) and on three occasions as a sophomore (Feb. 18, Feb. 25 and March 11, 2002). The Iowa senior posted a career-high and program-record tally of 39.750 to win the all-around while also claiming crowns in the vault (9.975), uneven bars (9.950) and floor exercise (9.950) and tying for second on the balance beam (9.875). The eighth-ranked Hawkeyes produced 197.150 team points in the victory to establish another school record. Maday has now collected the Conference Gymnast of the Week accolade three times this season, including twice in the first three weeks. The 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has been granted seven weekly awards in her career, including being honored twice in 2003 and once in 2002 and 2001. February 11 Tiffanie Janke, SR, OHIO STATE Schaumburg, Ill./Conant With a pair of Ohio State’s top gymnasts out of the lineup, Janke competed in the all-around for the first time since her freshman season and scored a career-high 39.575 to win the event and earn Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors. The OSU senior led her team to the All-Ohio Championships title for the third time in the last four years, as the unranked Buckeyes knocked off No. 19 Kent State and Bowling Green. Janke posted scores of 9.9 or higher in three of the four events and tied for the top spot on the vault (9.900) and balance beam (9.925). She also tied for fourth on the uneven bars (9.825) and the floor exercise (9.925). The 2003 All-Big Ten First Team selection is the first Buckeye to collect the Conference weekly honor this season. This is the third weekly award of Janke’s career, as she was also selected on March 11, 2003, and March 20, 2002. February 4 Stephanie Gran, SR, IOWA Wauconda, Ill./Illinois Gymnastics Institute Gran equaled the school record to win the all-around and led the Hawkeyes past North Carolina State to earn her second straight Big Ten Gymnast of the Week accolade. The Iowa senior posted a career-high score of 39.650 to claim the all-around title. She also registered career-bests to win the uneven bars (9.900) and balance beam (9.900) while also claiming the floor exercise title (9.950) and placing second in the vault (9.900). The Illinois native is the second Iowa gymnast this season to pick up a pair of weekly Conference honors as teammate and fellow-senior Alexis Maday was selected on January 7 and 21. Gran earns the third Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award of her career, as she was also honored on February 11, 2002. January 28 Stephanie Gran, SR, IOWA Wauconda, Ill./Illinois Gymnastics Institute For the third time in the first four weeks of the season, an Iowa student-athlete has claimed Big Ten Gymnast of the Week accolades as Stephanie Gran led the Hawkeyes to a win over Michigan with two individual titles and the all-around crown. Fellow-senior Alexis Maday has already collected the weekly Conference honor on two occasions, on January 7 and 21. Gran posted a score of 39.575 to claim the all-around title against Michigan, which has won the last five Big Ten Championships. The Gophers senior helped Minnesota place second in the event behind only the host Razorbacks, who are ranked ninth nationally in the latest poll. Skokut, who is currently rated fourth nationally on the bars, posted a score of 9.925 in the event to finish first while registering a score of 9.875 on the balance beam to place third. The three-time All-Big Ten selection is aiming to become just the second Minnesota gymnast in school history to collect All-League honors in each of her four years, joining Mindy Knaeble (1995-98) and Marie Roethlisberger (1987-90). January 7 Alexis Maday, SR, IOWA Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Maday claimed the all-around crown and three individual titles at the 2004 Cancun Invitational to collect the first Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor this season. The senior led the Hawkeyes to a second-place finish in the event and equaled her career-high to win the all-around with a score of 39.65. She also placed first in the vault (9.9), tied for the top spot on the balance beam (9.875) and floor exercise (9.925) and finished second on the uneven parallel bars with a career-best score of 9.95. The 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year is a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, as she is seeking to become the first Iowa standout to be honored in each of her four seasons. Maday has earned four Conference titles in her three-year career, which is tied for the seventh-highest total in League annals, and is the defending Big Ten champion in the uneven parallel bars.
