Big Ten Women's Gymnasts Prepare for NCAA Championships

Three conference women’s gymnastics teams and six individual gymnasts will represent the Big Ten at the 2013 NCAA Championships, which begin Friday and run through Sunday at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif. Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota will take part in the team competitions, Nebraska’s Jessie DeZiel and Emily Wong, Ohio State’s Melanie Shaffer and Penn State’s Sharaya Musser are part of the all-around group, Nebraska’s Brittany Skinner will appear in the vault competition and Ohio State’s Sarah Miller will compete in the balance beam event.

Competition begins Friday with two pre-qualifying sessions in advance of Saturday’s team finals. The top three teams from each semifinal will advance to the Super Six team final, scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. In addition, the top four finishers on each event in pre-qualifying session (including ties) will advance to the individual event finals at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

At 3 p.m. on Friday, Illinois and Minnesota, along with DeZiel, Musser, Skinner and Wong, take part in the first semifinal, while Michigan, Miller and Shaffer will compete in the second semifinal, scheduled for 9 p.m.

Last season, Nebraska and Ohio State competed in the pre-qualifying sessions, while three Husker gymnasts advanced to the individual finals in their respective events. Janelle Giblin placed sixth on the vault, DeZiel recorded a sixth-place finish in the floor exercise and Wong finished 10th on the balance beam.
