Indiana and Penn State Take Home First Weekly Awards of 2010

Jan. 11, 2010

The conference office announced on Monday the first weekly women’s indoor track and field awards for meets through January 4-10. Penn State’s Shavon Greaves was tabbed Big Ten track athlete of the week while Indiana’s Faith Sherrill earned the nod as field athlete of the week.

Track Athlete of the Week:
Shavon Greaves, Penn State
Jr. - Lakewood, N.J. – Lakewood

Junior Shavon Greaves made a statement on the NCAA sprint scene at the Penn State Relays last Saturday, posting NCAA-leading marks in the 60- and 200-meters. Greaves opened the day with an NCAA-provisional qualifying 7.33 in the 60-meter preliminaries, and followed up with an impressive 7.30 in the event final - good for her first victory of the 2010 season. The Lakewood, N.J., native then sprinted to a speedy personal-best 23.22 in the 200, which was also good for first place and another NCAA-qualifying effort. Greaves is also swiftly solidifying her spot in Penn State history, as her performances in both events on Saturday are ranked second to only 11-time All-American Connie Moore in Penn State annals. Greaves was joined by teammates Doris Anyanwu, Caitlin DeFusco, and Fawn Dorr on the winning 4x400-meter relay, which finished in 3:41.70 - just shy of the NCAA-qualifying mark of 3:40.00. This is the first weekly indoor honor for Greaves’ career.

Last Penn State Track Athlete of the Week: Bridget Franek (Feb. 16, 2009)

Field Athlete of the Week:
Faith Sherrill, Indiana
Jr. - Ft. Wayne, Ind. – Northrop

Junior Faith Sherrill opened the 2010 indoor campaign in convincing fashion at the Indiana Open on Saturday by posting the nation’s best mark in the shot put while also breaking a longstanding IU record that stood for 18 years. Sherrill recorded a heave of 16.70m (54-9.5), obliterating her career mark of 15.05m in 2008. The mark is a foot and a half better than the second best in the Big Ten so far this season. After redshirting last year, Sherrill moves from seventh in IU annals to 37 centimeters better than the previous IU record, besting NCAA shot put champion Katrina Koch (1992) and Jennifer Brown (2000). The Ft. Wayne, Ind., native also posted a career best in the weight throw, adding nearly four feet to her previous high with a heave of 18.34m (60-2). The toss moves her from sixth to fourth in the IU records. She is now within two inches of leading the Big Ten in the weight throw as well. This is the first weekly award for Sherrill.

Last Indiana Field Athlete of the Week: Tiffany Howard (Jan. 12, 2009)
