Minnesota and Penn State Athletes Given Weekly Honors

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Bridget Franek, Penn State
Franek posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 5,000 meters this past weekend at the Washington Husky Classic, crossing the line at 16:03.40. Her performance is the fourth-fastest in the nation, tops in the Big Ten and a new personal best. The junior finished second to a competitor who set the new collegiate record. Franek has already punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 3,000 meters and the mile run. The Hiram, Ohio, native collects her second award of the season and of her career.

Alicia Rue, Minnesota
Rue cleared an NCAA automatic qualifying height of 14-1 (4.30m.) in the pole vault this past weekend at the Iowa State Classic. She bested the field by six inches to earn her fourth event crown of the season. Earlier this year, the junior posted the nation’s top mark of 14-4 (4.37m.). Rue takes home her third weekly laurel of the season and the fifth of her career.
