Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue Earn Big Ten Women’s Indoor Track and Field Postseason Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the 2017 Big Ten Women’s Indoor Track and Field postseason award winners on Thursday following the NCAA Championships. Purdue’s Devynne Charlton earned Track Athlete of the Year recognition. Ohio State’s Sade Olatoye claimed Field Athlete of the Year honors, while Penn State’s Danae Rivers was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Charlton earns Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year honors for the first time after previously claiming Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships. Charlton earned first team All-America honors, finishing second in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.93 seconds. Charlton also won both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdle crowns and finished second in the 200-meter dash at the Big Ten Championships. Charlton is the first Purdue student to be named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year.

Olatoye, who also claimed Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships recognition, finished fourth in the women’s weight throw at the NCAA Championships with a mark of 21.69 meters, earning first team All-America recognition. At the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships, Olatoye won both the women’s weight throw and the shot put. Olatoye is the first Ohio State student to claim Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year recognition.

Rivers finished third in the women’s one-mile race at the NCAA Championships with a time of 4:33.89 and led Penn State’s distance medley relay team at the NCAA Championships, propelling the foursome to a sixth-place finish with a time of 11:04.89. At the Big Ten Championships, Rivers won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:06.10 and anchored the distance medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 11:10.53. Rivers is the third Penn State student to claim Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Shavon Greaves in 2008.
