NCAA Women's Lacrosse - First Round

Northwestern and Penn State both tallied opening round wins in the NCAA Tournament, with the Wildcats defeating Louisville, and Penn State upending Winthrop. Northwestern advances to take on sixth-seeded Notre Dame on Sunday, while the Nittany Lions will face second-seeded Florida.

Freshman Mallory Weisse made a career-high 12 saves and sophomore Selena Lasota finished with five points to lead Northwestern past Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening, 15-5.

The Wildcats will play No. 6-seed Notre Dame on Sunday at Arlotta Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

With the victory, head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller improved to 40-5 in the NCAA Tournament and the Wildcats eliminated the Cardinals for the third consecutive season.

The 11th-ranked Nittany Lion women’s lacrosse team used a 7-0 second-half run to pull away from Winthrop, 16-6, in the NCAA First Round on Friday evening at Dizney Lacrosse Stadium. Steph Lazo tallied a seven-point night to lead four Penn State hat tricks.

The Nittany Lions advance to the NCAA Second Round will attempt to reach their fourth NCAA Quarterfinals in five years when they face host, No. 2 seed Florida (18-1), on Sunday at 1 p.m.
