UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s lacrosse team advanced to its second consecutive national semifinals following a hard-fought 14-12 victory against fifth-seeded Princeton on Sunday afternoon. Senior goalie Cat Rainone made two saves at point-blank range in the final minute of play to preserve the victory for the host Nittany Lions. Penn State will square off against top-seeded and unbeaten Maryland in Friday’s national semifinals at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Freshman Maria Auth led the offensive attack with four goals, while Madison Carter and Katie O’Donnell each chipped in with three goals apiece. Rainone led the defensive effort with 13 saves, helping the Nittany Lions advance to championship weekend with an overall record of 17-3.
The top two teams in the Big Ten standings will face off on Friday, May 26 at 5 p.m. ET in a game that will be carried live on ESPN3. The second semifinal will feature a pair of unseeded opponents, as Navy and Boston College will play at 7:30 p.m. ET. The winners of Friday’s semifinal games will advance to the national championship game on Monday, May 28th at 11 a.m. on ESPNU.
