PHILADELPHIA – Junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg of the Maryland women’s lacrosse team was recognized as the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for the 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Thursday.
The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 90 championships. Stukenberg, who also earned the award last season, holds a 4.0 GPA as a biological sciences major. The honor was announced at the NCAA lacrosse banquet at the Franklin Institute.
“We are so proud of Zoe and all the hard work she puts in,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “She’s such an important leader for us both on the field and off, and it’s an incredible honor for her to be recognized for her academic success. Zoe is such an important player and person for his team, and we’re so proud of how she represents Maryland lacrosse.”
Stukenberg is a 2016 IWLCA Second Team All-American and a unanimous All-Big Ten selection. She is third on the team with 45 goals, 15 assists and 60 points. A co-captain and leader in the midfielder, she also has 25 ground balls, 39 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. The Ellicott City, Md., native was one of 25 players on the Tewaaraton nominee list and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
“I want to congratulate Zoe on this prestigious honor,” said director of athletics Kevin Anderson. “To earn this award for a second straight year shows her commitment to academic excellence. Zoe is a tremendous role model and leader and an outstanding representative of Maryland Athletics.”
In its seventh year, the Elite 90 Award was instituted to recognize the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
The top-seeded Terps (21-0) take on fourth-seeded Syracuse (19-5) in the NCAA Championship semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pa. The game will be streamed on ESPN3.
