Boat of the Week:
Ohio State’s First Varsity Eight
Ohio State’s First Varsity Eight earns its second consecutive boat of the week laurel after posting a perfect 3-0 record in its first home regatta of the season. The first two wins of the day for the Buckeye No. 12 First Varsity Eight came against No. 8 Brown and Notre Dame. Ohio State opened with a lead and extended it to nearly a boat length lead over each team at the midway point. The Buckeye First Varsity Eight crossed the line with a season-best time of 6:22.60, followed by Brown (6:28.67) and Notre Dame (6:31.54). During the afternoon session, Ohio State claimed a victory over Big Ten foe Indiana with a time of 6:22.90. With stronger winds, the Buckeyes still gained an early lead on the Hoosiers and settled into a 33 stroke per minute pace by the 1,000 meter mark. This allowed Ohio State to pull away to a two-boat length lead at the 1,250 meter mark and a three-boat length lead at the three quarters mark. Ohio State crossed the line just .30 seconds slower than its morning run, while Indiana came across at 6:40.63. OSU’s winning crew consists of Claudia Wurzel, Sara Wallace, Ingrid Aasaaren, Katie Flarida, Claudia Herpertz, Susanne Herbrand, Johnna Burns, Ulrike Denker and Erika Benford.
