2004 Big Ten Rowing Championships Seeds Announced
April 26, 2004
Ohio State and Minnesota have claimed the top seeds in all six events for the 2004 Big Ten Women's Rowing Championships. The fifth annual event is slated for Saturday, May 1 at Lake Macbride in Iowa.
The Buckeyes' First Varsity Eight crew, ranked No. 1 in the nation for four straight weeks, is the top seed in that event, while Ohio State also will be the top seed in the II Varsity Eight race. The OSU IV8 was named Big Ten Boat of the Week a record four times this season. It is the first Big Ten crew to be ranked first nationally since the inception of women's rowing as a Conference sport in 2000. Coach Andy Teitelbaum's squad won the Big Ten Championships title in 2002.
Minnesota has claimed the No. 1 seed in the other four events - I Varsity Four, I Novice Eight, II Novice Eight and II Varsity Four. Coach Wendy Davis' I Novice Eight boat is undefeated this spring and the I Varsity Eight boat is coming off a pair of wins over Kansas and SMU last weekend, earning Big Ten Boat of the Week laurels. The Gophers' highest Big Ten Championships finish was fifth place in 2002.
Michigan is the defending Big Ten Champion. The Wolverines have claimed the title three times - in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Ohio State is the only other school to win a Big Ten rowing crown.
